Brazil, Porto Alegre celebrates Republic Day

(ANSA) – PORTO ALEGRE, 04 GIU – In the presence of the Governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, the Mayor of Porto Alegre, Sebastião Melo, and numerous Secretaries of State and State Deputies, as well as the Hon. Fabio Porta, who spoke on behalf of the Italian Parliament, the Consulate General of Italy in Porto Alegre celebrated Republic Day with a solemn event at the prestigious Circolo Leopoldina Juvenil, in the heart of the capital city of Gaúcha.
Doing the honours was Consul General Valerio Caruso, who in his speech emphasised the importance of republican values, the friendship between Italy and Rio Grande do Sul, and the deep historical and cultural bond that unites the Italian people and the Gaucho people, in a year also marked by the commemoration of 150 years of Italian immigration to the State.
During the ceremony, Consul Caruso also awarded, on behalf of the President of the Republic, the honour of Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia to Alex Mingozzi, coach of the Brazilian national beach volleyball team, and to Erasmo Battistella, President of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Rio Grande do Sul, for their contribution to strengthening relations between Italy and Brazil.
The evening was enriched by the performance of Gaetano Donizetti’s opera ‘L’Elisir d’Amore,’ by the Companhia de Ópera do Rio Grande do Sul, directed by Maestro Flávio Leite, who moved the audience with a highly artistic performance.
At the end of the performance, guests took part in a cocktail offered by the sponsors of the Consulate General: Florense, Vinícola Nova Aliança and Trento, which contributed to making the atmosphere even more convivial and refined.
