(ANSA) – SAN PAOLO, 03 GIU – One of São Paulo’s main museums was coloured yesterday in green, white and red, the colours of the Italian flag. to celebrate Republic Day.
The event was organised in the Pina Contemporanea, an integral part of the São Paulo Art Gallery, by the Consulate General of Italy, bringing together local authorities and representatives of the Italian community in the city with the largest number of Italian descendants in the world, as well as diplomatic and consular representatives from dozens of other countries.
Consul Domenico Fornara and Consul Adjunct Marianna Haddad welcomed the hundreds of guests to the party, which was enlivened by Italian pianist, composer and arranger Andrea Pagani, who began his first tour of Brazil for the occasion.
“It is an honour to represent Italy this evening in this beautiful place. Bringing one’s music to the world, to a new audience, is always inspiring,’ said Pagani.
During the opening ceremony, Mafalda Minozzi sang the anthems of Italy and Brazil and then took the stage to accompany Pagani’s jazz with her voice. Meanwhile, guests tasted the best of Italian food and wine.
During the celebration, which took place a few days after the approval of the decree-law that limited the principle of jus sanguinis to descendants with at least one grandparent born in Italy, Consul Fornara said he understood “the feeling of emptiness” that the end of the old law had caused in many Italian natives, pointing out that Italy, however, “was the only country to accept unlimited citizenship” by right of blood.
