Britain is set to experience the coldest night of autumn so far as colder Arctic air is drawn south over the UK.
Following a spell of unusually warm weather, a shift in the jet stream will bring a dramatic change to Britain’s weather systems.
A cold front, pushing down from the north will see minimum temperatures just one or two degrees above freezing by dawn on Thursday.
With it will come a band of rain falling over much of England and Wales.
The jet stream – a flow of fast-flowing winds in the upper atmosphere which controls much of the UK’s weather – has until now been sitting to the north, drawing up warmer air from the equator and keeping colder polar winds at bay.
However, with the jet stream changing to sit further south by Thursday, colder air will be drawn over Britain.
It will feel significantly colder compared to recent weeks – especially in the south of England.
Although it feels dramatic, the shift will bring temperatures much closer to the average for this time of year or perhaps even lower.

Maximum temperatures will sit around 12-14C today across much of Northern Ireland and Scotland on Wednesday and rising just 2C warmer in England and Wales.
Thursday morning will see single digits across all of the UK, ranging from between 3C to 9C.
It marks a dramatic shift given at least somewhere in the UK has been above 20C every day since June 11.
Britons can expect to see a touch of frost on the grass and car windscreens in those areas which are particularly cold.

The Met Office forecast today suggests: “Rain across England will move eastwards through the day, with brighter skies following in the west.
“Sunshine and showers across the rest of the UK, these heavy across Scotland. Feeling colder for many, with a brisk northerly breeze.”
Then by tonight the rain will clear southeast during the evening, the forecaster says.
It adds: “Clear spells and showers elsewhere, with showers tending to become confined to coastal stretches overnight. Chilly, with a patchy frost in the north.”
Addressing Thursday, the Met Office says: “A chilly, though mostly sunny morning.
“Cloud increasing in the west, with rain moving in across western areas by the afternoon, with increasingly gusty winds in the north.”
The weekend is likely to see further showers, especially on Saturday but these spells should clear up by Sunday.
Friday will see a small uptick in temperature before cooling off over the weekend again.
