The GSTC2023 Global Conference, hosted in Antalya, Türkiye, gathered 350 tourism professionals from 51 countries, creating an essential platform for advancing sustainable tourism practices.
Alongside its focus on sustainability, the event demonstrated a commitment to environmental responsibility by measuring and offsetting its carbon emissions.
Understanding the Carbon Footprint
A carbon footprint refers to the total greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e), emitted directly or indirectly by an individual, organization, product, or event over a specific period.
It quantifies the environmental impact of human activities in contributing to climate change. These emissions stem from energy consumption, transportation, production, and waste generation, among other activities.
The GSTC2023 Carbon Footprint Report
The Carbon Footprint Report for the GSTC2023 Global Conference was meticulously developed by the Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA), with contributions from Control Union and Bureau Veritas.
The report adheres to internationally recognized standards, including ISO 14064 and the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, ensuring accuracy and reliability in the measurement of greenhouse gas emissions.
Measuring Emissions: Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3
Within the framework of the GHG Protocol, the conference’s emissions were categorized as follows:
Scope 1 (Direct Emissions): Emissions from on-site energy sources, such as fuel combustion.
Scope 2 (Indirect Emissions): Emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, heating, and cooling consumed during the event.
Scope 3 (Other Indirect Emissions): Emissions from activities not directly controlled by the event organizers, including attendee travel, supply chain impacts, and waste disposal.
The Role of the GHG Protocol
The GHG Protocol, a globally recognized standard, was established by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).
It guides organizations in accounting for and managing their greenhouse gas emissions, promoting transparency and accountability in environmental reporting.
A Step Towards Sustainable Tourism
The GSTC2023 Global Conference in Antalya exemplified the integration of sustainability into event planning.
By measuring and offsetting its carbon footprint, the conference reinforced its dedication to mitigating the environmental impact of tourism and fostering global dialogue on sustainable practices.
Through initiatives like these, GSTC demonstrates that conferences and events can serve as a model for environmental responsibility, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change while advancing the agenda for sustainable tourism development.
