Comic Book Art Surf | Benício * Mike Kupperman * Mr Fish

Welcome to the latest edition  Comic Book Art Surf where we feature the work of the world’s artists we stumble upon while surfing the Internet.

The illustrators of the past are often ahead of their time, their superlative talent and will overcame technological limits. One of them was Brazil’s  José Luis Benício da Fonseca or, as he was known…

Benício

(1936 – 2021)

Benício created magazine and book covers, print advertisments, and movie posters (read his bio on Locus here). Covers, ads, and posters have to be eye-catching, creating the “sizzle” in viewers’ and readers’ brains to that gets them to open a magazine or think of buying a movie ticket. Sixty years ago, there no Adobe, digital art tablets or tables, or CorelDraw: just paper, pencils, paint, pens, tape, paste, etc.

The perspective, detail, and sheer beauty of Benício‘s work is astounding.

Offbeat, weird, disturbed artists whose work makes people go, “What the f*ck?!” are my favourites. A  writer/artist who can create a graphic novel with about a snake and bacon duo is on another level in another dimension.

Michael Kupperman is such an artist and creator. His work has appeared in Heavy Metal and DC Comics. Fantagraphics publishes his creator-owned work (Comic Vine bio here) – and is on the social interwebs (IG | Michael Kupperman).

We do not do politics here on #1 Comic Books Blog but there’s no denying the artistic chops of many political cartoonists. We came across an exceptionally talented, and very controversial editorial cartoonist on Instagram. Dwayne Booth/Mr Fish doesn’t pull his punches – his editorial cartoons will give people a bleeding nose no matter where they are politically. You’ll be drop-kicked out of your comfort zone.

You can see, and support, more of his work on ClownCrack Productions (homepage) and Instagram (here).

DisclaimerThe political views and opinions expressed in the work of Dwayne Booth (also known as “Mr. Fish”) do not necessarily reflect my own views or beliefs. They are presented here based on their artistic merits.

Please continue (if you dare).
