(ANSA) – ROME, JUN 20 – Cutting aid to Africa is a mistake and European investments there must be boosted, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told a summit on Italy’s Mattei Plan for Africa she co-chaired with Premier Giorgia Meloni in Rome Friday.
“We are combining the resources of our EU and member countries to attract private capital” to Africa, “we see that other countries around the world are cutting their funding, we think it is wrong,” said the EC chief at von der Leyen, at the conference on the Mattei Plan and the Global Gateway at Villa Pamphili in Rome.
“Attracting new investments to Africa is in our interest. And today’s event shows that our approach is bearing fruit”.
With the Global Gateway, she said, “we started with an enormous firepower of 150 billion euros for Africa”. (ANSA).
