DOGE freezes employees’ credit cards at U.S. bases in Italy

(ANSA) – ROME, MAR 7 – US President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) led by Elon Musk has shut down the credit cards of American and Italian civilian employees who work in the offices of the Aviano air base and of the Ederle and Del Din army bases near Vicenza, local newspaper Messaggero Veneto reported on Friday.
The bank accounts used for administrative expenses including basic supplies have also been provisionally shut down, well-informed sources said Friday.
The suspension was reportedly announced on Thursday to the employees of the military bases located in the northeastern Fiuli-Venezia Giulia and Veneto regions.
The move, part of a sweeping freeze on most federal credit cards, is temporary and set to last 30 days, well-informed sources said.
The objective of the newly formed department, which is headed by billionaire Tesla, SpaceX and X executive Musk, is to improve the transparency of federal spending and a centralized system will be reportedly created to register every payment, including discretional purchases. (ANSA).
