Doug McMillon made a groundbreaking announcement on November 14, 2025, that sent Walmart shares down 1.2 per cent, in part due to concern about his decision. The company’s current CEO and President confirmed that he will retire on January 31, 2026. McMillon became Walmart’s CEO in 2014 and is often credited with transforming Walmart from a traditional retail box into a technology-driven powerhouse. McMillon has been working at Walmart since 1984, and his retirement next year will make him one of the longest-serving CEOs in the company’s history.

For the uninitiated, McMillon took Walmart’s revenue from USD 485.7 billion to USD 681 billion. Chuck Grom, a renowned analyst with Gordon Haskett, reacted to Doug McMillon’s retirement announcement, stating that McMillon is unequivocally the best Walmart CEO since the company’s founder, Sam Walton. Chuck also added that McMillon’s retirement is a bit earlier than anticipated. However, on the other side, as per McMillon, this is the best time to hand over the company to its worthy successor, John Furner, who is Walmart’s Chief CEO of the U.S. division.
