(ANSA) – QUITO, 25 FEB – The Italian Ambassador to Ecuador, Giovanni Davoli, was received in Quito by the new Minister of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition, Maria Cristina Recalde Larrea. The Ambassador was accompanied by representatives of the AICS (Italian Development Cooperation Agency) office in Bogotá, responsible for Ecuador, and of FIEDS (Italian Ecuadorian Fund for Sustainable Development).
The main topic of the meeting was Italian cooperation in the prevention and management of fires, a particularly topical issue in Ecuador where, in 2024, several tens of thousands of hectares of land were burnt, causing considerable damage to property and people in important cities of the Andean belt, such as Quito itself.
The Amazonia Sin Fuego Programme of Italian cooperation is currently in its second phase and the ambassador has taken up the Ecuadorian request for funding for a third phase. Still on the subject of fire prevention and management, Davoli highlighted the presence in the country of the Amazon+ regional programme managed by AICS through the EU’s delegated cooperation mechanism with a budget of EUR 18.4 million for four years of activity. He also recalled that agreements are being finalised for another delegated cooperation initiative, “Eco SOS Ukumari Forest Partnerships”, which aims to protect the ecosystem of the amazonian forest in Ecuador. Italy, through AICS, will manage a forest protection and fire prevention project together with Hungary.
