Edinburgh Airport Opens a New STEM Centre to Inspire Young Innovators, Bridge the Skills Gap, and Develop Future Leaders in Science and Technology
Edinburgh Airport

Edinburgh Airport has taken a major step in shaping the future workforce by inaugurating its brand-new STEM Centre, designed to ignite a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) among young learners. Officially launched by Scotland’s Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes and acclaimed astrophysicist Dame Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell, the facility aims to provide an interactive and engaging environment for students to explore potential career pathways in STEM fields.

A Hub for Learning and Discovery

Unveiled on International Women’s Day, the state-of-the-art STEM Centre at Edinburgh Airport is capable of hosting full classroom sessions, offering an immersive experience for students. The facility is designed to showcase real-world applications of STEM through hands-on learning opportunities, fostering curiosity and enthusiasm for science and technology.

Sessions at the centre will be led by volunteers who work across diverse roles at the airport, including IT, engineering, data analytics, and operations. Through their expertise, students will gain firsthand insights into the practical aspects of STEM careers in the aviation industry.

Engaging Young Minds Through Interactive Experiences

The centre’s curriculum features a variety of interactive activities, including:

  • Exploring STEM Careers: Demonstrations highlighting the diverse STEM-related roles at the airport, from air traffic control to cybersecurity.
  • Hands-On Experiments: Engaging puzzles, problem-solving exercises, and hands-on experiments to challenge young minds and enhance critical thinking skills.
  • Career Inspiration: Sessions designed to motivate students and expand their understanding of how STEM skills contribute to aviation and beyond.

Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport said:

“Providing opportunities for young people is something we’re really passionate about, and this fantastic new space will encourage bright and active young minds to get excited about a potential future career in STEM.

“As Scotland’s busiest airport – and as a major employer in the area – it’s our duty share the benefits of the airport with those closest us, and we look forward to welcoming local schools and educational groups to the facility.

“We also understand the important of a diverse workforce and want to inspire young girls and women into STEM careers, making clear that there are opportunities in aviation and beyond for their expertise and knowledge.

“I know how hard our teams have worked to make this happen, so it’s a proud day for everyone involved, and we all look forward to seeing this new facility providing inspiration and lasting memories for those who use it.”

A Commitment to Education and Sustainability

As a key part of the VINCI Airports network, Edinburgh Airport continues to strengthen its commitment to sustainability and workforce development through its Greater Good strategy. The launch of the STEM Centre aligns with the airport’s broader goals of providing high-quality job opportunities, fostering early career development, and ensuring access to skills training for all.

By investing in STEM education, Edinburgh Airport is playing a crucial role in preparing the next generation for future careers in the ever-evolving landscape of aviation and technology. This initiative not only equips students with essential skills but also reinforces the importance of innovation in building a sustainable future for the industry.

Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes said:

“I am clear that any barriers to participation in STEM activities for all young people, and particularly girls, must be challenged and overcome.

“This initiative from Edinburgh Airport is a great example of a major employer taking action, in partnership with schools, to boost opportunities for STEM learning and experiences for young people across Scotland.”

Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell said:

“Puzzles and activities like the ones we had on display are all about experimentation, and it’s important to keep trying—that’s how we learn.

“Please keep exploring and pushing boundaries—it’s what helps us thrive and enables today’s younger generation to become tomorrow’s inspiring figures.”
