EU Pact compatible with defence spending hike says Meloni

(ANSA) – ROME, JUN 23 – The European Union’s Stability and Growth Pact must be compatible with the planned hike in defence spending by member States, Premier Giorgia Meloni told the House Monday ahead of an EU summit in Brussels on Thursday and Friday and a NATO summit in The Hague on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“The need remains, at a European level, to make the rules of the Stability Pact compatible with the increase in defense spending agreed with the allies. In particular, with reference to the excessive deficit procedures, regarding which it is necessary to achieve equal treatment and avoid risks of asymmetric applications”, Meloni said in her formal ‘communications’ to the Chamber of Deputies in view of the European Council.
At the summit in The Hague “we will discuss the proposal presented by NATO Secretary General (Mark) Rutte on strengthening the Alliance’s defense capacity and we will be called upon to make commitments that are up to the complexity of the times we live in.
“Commitments that must be clear, transparent and above all sustainable from an economic and financial point of view, both for this government and for those who will come after us”.
