(ANSA) – ROME, MAR 4 – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s rearm plan provides concrete tools to boost European investments in defence and exempts military expenditure from EU limits on government spending in a measure long requested by Italy, Carlo Fidanza, the head of the MEPs from Premier Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, said on Tuesday.
“The plan ‘ReArm Europe’ outlined by President von der Leyen has the value of finally moving from the mere announcement of a principle to concrete tools strengthening the framework of European defence investments”, said Fidanza in a note.
“Particularly important for Italy is the possibility of activating the stability pact’s national safeguard clause which will finally allow to deduct the rising investments requested from the deficit-to-GDP parameters – a measure Italy, the Meloni government and Brothers of Italy have long requested and which is finally accepted”, he said.
As part of the plan, the Commission proposed that defence spending be exempt from limits imposed by EU rules on government debt.
Speaking about common investments and the other measures proposed by the plan, the note concluded they will be evaluated once they are presented. (ANSA).
