Flooding in Milan as torrential rain batters north

(ANSA) – ROME, SEP 22 – There was flooding in parts of Milan and landslides in the province of Como on Monday, when Lombardy was hit especially hard by a wave of torrential rain battering northern Italy.
The flooding was especially bad in the Niguarda district of Milan where the Seveso River burst its banks.
Firefighters were called out to make dozens of interventions regarding emergencies linked to the extreme weather in the region, where the provinces of Monza and Varese were also seriously affected.
Scientists say the climate crisis caused by human greenhouse gas emissions is making extreme weather events such as heatwaves, droughts, supercharged storms and flooding more frequent and more intense.
Although there are many sources of the greenhouse gases that are causing global heating, the main driver is the burning of fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal, sales of which generate huge profits for the world’s energy giants. (ANSA).
