Focus on research at Italian Embassy event in Dakar

(ANSA) – ROMA, 23 MAG – The Day of Italian Research in the World was celebrated in Senegal with a hybrid event organised by the Italian Embassy in Dakar in collaboration with Senegal’s Université Numérique Cheikh Hamidou Kane (Un-Chk), the embassy itself announced in a statement on 22 May. As part of the initiative, scientific diplomacy actions and programmes supported by Italy in West Africa were illustrated and promoted.
The event opened with a speech by the Italian ambassador in Dakar, Caterina Bertolini, who emphasised that scientific diplomacy is a strategic tool for tackling major global challenges and promoting international cooperation based on knowledge, innovation and training. The ambassador also recalled the commitment of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and higher education, research and innovation institutions in strengthening ties with Senegal and other accreditation countries (Gambia, Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde) through academic mobility programmes, scholarships and participation in research projects.
In the afternoon, an online seminar entitled ‘Scientific Diplomacy for Global Challenges’ was held, moderated by the embassy’s scientific attaché, Eugenio Cavallo, who opened the proceedings by recalling how Italian scientific diplomacy is intended to establish stable relations of mutual interest and benefit between the knowledge systems of Italy and West Africa. High-profile Italian experts and institutional representatives contributed to the seminar, including Maeci officials, university professors, scientific advisors at embassies and international organisations, and representatives of the National Research Council (CNR).
The speeches explored the strategic role of scientific diplomacy in Italian foreign policy, the functions of scientific attachés and global collaborations in the fields of physics, space sciences and cooperation in international organisations (Unesco). Concrete examples of scientific partnerships and good practices demonstrating the effectiveness of scientific diplomacy as a lever for shared and sustainable development were also presented.
The event, the communiqué continued, confirms Italy’s commitment to promoting open and inclusive scientific dialogue with West Africa, enhancing the contribution of science to growth, stability and social inclusion. The experiences shared aroused great interest among the participants, opening up new prospects for academic and technological collaboration, concludes the Italian Embassy in Dakar.
