Gehenna: Naked Aggression is locked and loaded with simple, bloody action.
Patrick Kindlon (writer), Maurizio Rosenzweig (artist), Matteo Vattani (colourist), Jim Campbell (letterer), and Matt Battaglia (designer) deliver character development and intense action. By the time you finish the first issue, you’ll will have been shown who Gehenna is, why she’s in the jam she’s in while having fun watching mafia goons die.
This is the first work by this creative team I’ve ever seen, and I found myself wanting the second issue before I had finished this one.
What I like…
Maurizio Rosenzweig’s raw, jagged, grainy art. It’s as if we have been given his sketchbook and boards.
Patrick Kindlon‘s scripting is tight and he gives Gehenna deft, clipped dialogue (a welcome departure from the nurturing mom figures in many female-led actioners). Women can be rude, brusque, and a mean to little kids too.
Superlative writing is often manifested by what is not said or explained. The following three panels are are perfect examples of how much can be said with less, by letting the art, setting, mood show the reader what a character is thinking or feeling.
Experimentation keeps comic book reading and collecting fresh, enjoyable. I don’t always add comic books I try to my sub, but Gehenna: Naked Aggression #1 did it’s job: making me hungry for the second issue.
