Genoa ex councillor suspends self from FdI over Salis probe

(ANSA) – ROME, JUN 18 – A former Genoa councillor for the Brothers of Italy (FdI) party suspended himself from Giorgia Meloni’s rightwing group Tuesday after being placed under investigation for alleged snooping on centre-left mayoral candidate Silvia Salis who recently became forst citizen of the northwestern Italian port city.
Sergio Gambino has been accused of compiling a dossier aimed at hurting Salis’ chances with the Genoese electorate, including a report of a car crash she was involved in.
In addition to this, the investigation also deals with episodes of alleged “subservience” by the former councillor in favour of four entrepreneurs for the handling of administrative practices in the sectors of public entertainment, roads, public transport as well as in the awarding of public contracts relating to residential care and reception of people belonging to socially vulnerable categories.
Salis, 39, a former Olympic hammer thrower who beat a centre-right candidate for mayor on May 27, on Tuesday said “the level of aggressiveness in politics is embarrassing” in relation to the Gambino slush dossier case and attacks portraying her as a “dumb blonde” in the run-up to the elections.
