(ANSA) – ROME, JUN 11 – Premier Giorgia Meloni said Wednesday that her government had been vindicated in raising the issue of alleged abuse of the system for legal migration to Italy.
“While many were shouting it was a scandal and accusing us of producing propaganda, a year ago I filed a complaint with the National Anti-Mafia and Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office to denounce serious irregularities in the ‘click day’ system for residence permits,” Meloni said via social media.
“Since then, several serious criminal actions related to the trafficking of residence permits have emerged.
“According to press reports, further disturbing confirmations have arrived today: fabricated digital identities, false recruitment, links with (mafia) clans, money in exchange for illegal entry into our country.
“An organised, criminal network, unmasked thanks to the work of the judiciary and law enforcement agencies.
“We were right. And we had a duty to denounce this.
“The government will continue to fight every form of illegality linked to immigration, because Italy is not a land of conquest for permit traffickers and those who live by cunning and shortcuts. Forward, without fear”. (ANSA).
