The Gerald R. Ford International Airport Authority, collaborating with Avflight Grand Rapids Corporation, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), Seamless Ventures, Southwest Airlines®, and the West Michigan Aviation Academy, has unveiled the seventh group of businesses chosen to receive over $200,000 in collective grant funding through the Ford Launchpad for Innovative Technologies and Entrepreneurship (FLITE).

“We are proud to welcome five new companies to the FLITE program that will pilot test their technologies at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport,” said Alex Peric, COO of the Ford International Airport Authority. “We appreciate the commitment of our partners in supporting companies that will shape the future of aviation.”

FLITE, an innovative program pioneering advancements in the aviation industry, is revolutionizing air travel by offering grant funding and pilot-testing opportunities to companies developing cutting-edge technologies and services. This round includes five visionary companies:

  1. Arrow Analytics: Harnesses artificial intelligence and sensor technology to uncover untapped data sources.
  2. Civilized Cycles: Delivers safe, sustainable, and cost-effective electric vehicle solutions.
  3. Metro Consulting Associates: Specializes in civil engineering and land surveying to support energy, community development, and infrastructure projects.
  4. Synaptic Aviation: Uses AI to optimize apron operations, improve safety measures, and enhance fuel efficiency.
  5. Tubular Network: Employs AI-powered delivery shuttles to automate goods transportation in tubes, ensuring efficient, eco-friendly, and secure logistics.

“We’re thrilled to be part of the FLITE program at Ford International Airport,” said Marc Liu, chief revenue officer at Civilized Cycles. “This partnership provides a unique opportunity to showcase the capabilities of our electric cargo trikes in a real-world setting and demonstrate how they can revolutionize airport operations.

“FLITE aligns perfectly with our mission to provide sustainable and efficient transportation solutions, and we’re excited to contribute to the growth of Michigan’s innovative mobility ecosystem.”

As Michigan’s primary advocate for economic growth, innovation, and job creation, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) continues to play a vital role in advancing progress. Through its Office of Future Mobility and Electrification (OFME), the MEDC has provided grant funding to support the latest cohort of companies participating in FLITE, aligning with the program’s mission to drive innovation within Michigan’s thriving mobility and technology sectors.

This winter and spring, the five selected companies will pilot their groundbreaking technologies at Ford International Airport:

  • Arrow Analytics: Testing an AI-driven camera system to identify carry-on luggage and streamline the boarding process.
  • Civilized Cycles: Demonstrating an electric vehicle designed for short-distance cargo movement within the airport terminal.
  • Metro Consulting Associates: Assessing future electrical demands and proposing tailored energy infrastructure solutions.
  • Synaptic Aviation: Implementing AI and computer vision technology to enhance ground operations, boosting both efficiency and accountability.
  • Tubular Network: Exploring innovative logistics to improve baggage handling before and after TSA screening using their automated tube-based system.

FLITE, recently honored with the 2024 Best Small and Emerging Airport Innovation Award by Airports Council International World and Amadeus, has supported over 30 companies, granting more than $1 million in funding across seven rounds.

Applications for the next round of FLITE are open now and will be accepted until June 30, 2025.
