Back in 1950s, when India was under the governance of the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, the country had to knock on US’ doors for help over the ongoing food crisis. The first agreement was signed in August 1956, and was intended to run for 3 years, but food deficits became more serious and all of the food commodities were imported in less than 2 years. Another agreement was negotiated in June 1958.
