Italy condemns Russian violation of NATO airspace

(ANSA) – ROME, SEP 10 – Premier Giorgia Meloni and Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani expressed condemnation on Wednesday after Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that Poland’s airspace had been violated by Russian drones overnight.
“On behalf of the Italian Government, I express full solidarity with Poland following Russia’s serious and unacceptable violation of Polish and NATO airspace,” Meloni said in a statement.
“Italy will continue to work to ensure Europe’s security, starting with the security of Ukraine, and to reach a just and lasting peace”.
Tajani said Italy stands with its EU and NATO partner.
“I strongly condemn the violation of Polish territory by Russian drones: a very serious and unacceptable act, which is an offence to the security of the entire Euro-Atlantic area,” Tajani said via X.
“Italy expresses full solidarity with #Polond, a friend, allied country, reiterating its commitment to the defence of sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“Every provocation must be firmly rejected by a united #Europe”.
Italian aircraft were involved in NATO’s response to the incursion, Reuters reported on Wednesday.
Polish F-16 fighter jets, Dutch F-35s and Italian AWACS surveillance planes and mid-air refueling aircraft were involved in the operation, Reuters reported, citing NATO sources.
It said the sources said NATO was not treating the incident as an attack but as a deliberate incursion (ANSA).
