Italy has strengthened its position as Europe’s top travel destination, according to the Italy Digital Destination Report 2025. Produced by The Data Appeal Company in collaboration with Mabrian, the study leverages cutting-edge analytics and artificial intelligence to explore the changing patterns of tourism across the country, offering an unprecedented view into travellers’ choices, preferences, and behaviors.
This year’s report analyzed 29.5 million digital interactions spanning 772,000 points of interest, including hotels, short-term rentals, landmarks, cultural sites, restaurants, and other attractions. Covering the period from September 2024 to August 2025, the analysis incorporated Large Language Models (LLMs) powered by generative AI for the first time, enabling a deeper understanding of the sentiment, emotions, and motivations expressed by visitors across multiple digital platforms.
The findings underscore Italy’s continued dominance in European travel intentions. Over the next six months, Italy is expected to capture 13.4% of all travel plans originating in Europe. When examining Southern Europe specifically, the country accounts for 34.2% of flight searches in the region. This data signals a rising interest in off-season travel, especially in autumn and winter, as visitors increasingly seek destinations that combine culture, scenery, and authentic local experiences without the summer crowds.
Cultural tourism remains at the heart of Italy’s appeal, with landmarks such as the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, and Milan Cathedral maintaining high levels of interest and engagement. Yet, the report indicates that travellers’ motivations are diversifying. Activities like hiking, cycling, food tours, and nature exploration are steadily gaining popularity, complementing Italy’s cultural richness and signaling a shift toward multi-faceted travel experiences.
Visitor demographics remain balanced, with domestic travellers representing 40% of trips and international visitors making up the remaining 60%, primarily from Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Spain. Trips are most commonly undertaken by couples (40%) or families (30%). However, solo travel is on the rise, particularly in major cities such as Rome, Florence, and Venice. Independent travellers increasingly prioritize quality of service, food experiences, and accessibility, while seeking greater inclusivity and value for money.
Accommodation continues to play a key role in overall satisfaction. Hotels are praised for their hospitality and comfort, earning a sentiment score of 84 out of 100. Short-term rentals perform even better, scoring 87.8, with positive reviews highlighting convenient locations, friendly hosts, and personalized experiences. Meanwhile, Italy’s food and beverage sector continues to impress, although pricing and service consistency remain areas for potential improvement.
The report also highlights trends in travel planning and digital engagement. While online travel agency prices have been stable this year, a projected 17% increase over the next six months is expected, particularly during peak periods such as New Year’s and Easter. The total number of online reviews has decreased from 35.5 million to 29.5 million compared with the previous year, reflecting a growing preference for alternative digital content formats, including short-form videos, social media reels, and TikTok reviews.
The integration of AI and advanced analytics provides tourism stakeholders with a powerful tool to anticipate shifts in visitor behavior, optimize offerings, and design sustainable, inclusive strategies. Insights from the report can help shape off-season campaigns, enhance cultural and natural attractions, and personalize experiences for a wider range of visitors.
Overall, the Italy Digital Destination Report 2025 illustrates a nation that continues to captivate travellers with its combination of heritage, culinary excellence, natural beauty, and dynamic experiences. By leveraging AI-driven insights, Italy is well-equipped to adapt to evolving tourist expectations, encourage off-season travel, and deliver memorable, authentic experiences to visitors from across the globe. Its commitment to diverse offerings and sustainable tourism practices ensures that Italy will remain a top European destination for years to come.
