(ANSA) – ROMA, 04 FEB – On behalf of Italy, the ambassador to Ukraine, Carlo Formosa, signed an agreement with UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) to launch a two million euro project to strengthen the energy resilience of Ukrainian cities. The initiative is funded by Italy and aims to support Ukraine’s reconstruction towards a more sustainable and decentralised energy system, in line with the ‘Build Back Better’ principle, promoting efficiency and security. The ceremony was attended by Ukraine’s Deputy Energy Minister, Roman Andarak, and representatives of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) in Kiev and UNEP.
“The project includes a detailed analysis of opportunities for the integration of renewable energy sources into the Ukrainian energy system, focusing on the evaluation of solar photovoltaic potential and the possibility of developing microgrids to strengthen the energy autonomy of cities. Advanced technological tools will be studied to improve energy efficiency and reduce consumption, with the aim of creating a more resilient urban energy planning model,’ Ambassador Formosa explained.
“One of the key aspects of the project concerns training and technology transfer, with the involvement of Italian and Ukrainian experts to develop local expertise in sustainable energy management. Furthermore, the programme will support the Ukrainian government in defining long-term policies for energy transition and attracting investments in the renewable energy sector,’ he added.
The project developed with UNEP is part of a broader Italian commitment to support energy recovery and security in Ukraine, for which a total of EUR 125 million has been earmarked, through joint initiatives and strategic collaborations with local and international institutions and partners.
