Italy stars at Sarajevo Film Festival

(ANSA) – SARAJEVO, 19 AGO – Italy is confirmed as one of the protagonists of the 31st Sarajevo Film Festival, running Aug. 15-22 in Sarajevo. Among the most anticipated international guests is Paolo Sorrentino, who arrived in Sarajevo just days before the opening of the Venice Film Festival, where he will be in competition with his latest work.
The famous director – as the Italian Embassy reported in a note – received the prestigious Honorary Heart of Sarajevo, an award given to leading figures in international cinema for their contribution to the art of filmmaking. At the award ceremony, Festival Director Jovan Marjanović emphasized Sorrentino’s unique ability to “create a global impact through local and personal stories,” enriched by a refined and deeply human visual language. “This is a great honor for me. This is an important award, but above all it is an important festival for European citizens,” Sorrentino said in front of a large and enthusiastic audience. In his honor, the festival set up a complete retrospective of his filmography as part of the “Tribute to” program, accompanied by a Masterclass in which the director dialogued with the audience on the themes of cinema, art and its impact on reality.
There are also numerous Italian co-productions on the schedule: among them, “Dom” by Massimiliano Battistella, expected to premiere at Venice Days at the Venice Film Festival and included in the SFF schedule on Friday, August 22. Italy also has its own space within the official programming, entitled “Passaggi d’autore,” curated by director Ado Hasanovic, and linked to the Sant’Antioco Mediterranean Short Film Festival. The festival is designed to highlight the most significant narrative and authorial paths in Italian short film, and this year also includes a strengthened female presence, with five out of six short films in the program directed by women. “We are proud of the presence this year at the SFF of the renowned director Paolo Sorrentino, among the most appreciated representatives of Italian cinema ever,” said the Ambassador of Italy to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Castellani, “His participation enhances at its best the bridge between history, that of a Festival born under conditions of conflict as a symbol of resilience and cultural resistance, and the future, represented by the unifying power of culture and cinema as instruments of dialogue and cohesion.
