Japan unveils the Welcome Suica mobile app: Essential details you should know

The Welcome Suica app offers a digital upgrade to the traditional Suica cards, aimed at making public transportation in Japan more convenient and efficient. Unlike its physical counterpart, which expires after 28 days, the digital version is valid for 180 days. Travelers can use the app for trains, buses, shopping at convenience stores, vending machines, and even at select restaurants.

Currently available for iOS users, the app can be downloaded on iPhones and Apple Watches. Previously, tourists needed to buy the physical card from JR East’s Travel Service Centres or vending machines at Narita and Haneda Airports in Tokyo.

Here’s how the Welcome Suica mobile app will transform your travel experience in Japan:

  • Tourists can easily purchase and pre-register on the Welcome Suica app before their trip, allowing for seamless and hassle-free navigation from the moment they land in Japan.
  • Access essential travel updates, including maps, train schedules, notifications about service disruptions, and comprehensive route planning.
  • Shinkansen (bullet train) tickets can be bought digitally through the app. For more details, check out our in-depth guide to Japan’s Shinkansen network.
  • Designed for iOS users, the digital card can be conveniently recharged using Apple Pay.
  • Following a temporary suspension in 2023 due to a global semiconductor shortage, sales of the non-personalised Suica and PASMO cards are expected to resume by March 1, 2025. The non-personalised Suica card is anonymous and can be used by anyone, while the PASMO card is a prepaid, rechargeable card similar to London’s Oyster Card.
