Last days of heat and sunshine, late-August storm arriving

(ANSA) – ROME, AUG 18 – Italy is enjoying, or suffering, its last few days of intense heat and bright sunshine as a usual late August storm front is set to sweep in, weathermen said Monday.
“Summer is preparing to collapse in Italy,” said Federico Brescia, meteorologist for the website www.iLMeteo.it “The start of the week will continue to be marked by heat and sunshine, with a few typical afternoon thunderstorms, but a change is just around the corner, bringing with it a sharp deterioration in weather conditions.” Brescia confirmed an imminent change, starting Wednesday the 20th, when a strong low-pressure system will enter our country, bringing a general drop in temperatures.
Today, the weather will be rather unstable in the south, where cooler northeastern currents will continue to favor the formation of numerous thunderstorms.
Things will be better in the central-northern regions, though with local instability in the mountains.
Starting tomorrow, the first signs of a marked change are expected.
The first thunderstorms will break out in the Alps this afternoon, while central and western Liguria could also be affected by the evening or nightfall.
The real turning point, however, will arrive between Wednesday the 20th and Thursday the 21st.
The arrival of a low-pressure front filled with significantly cooler air will trigger a severe wave of severe weather across central and northern Italy.
The hardest-hit regions will be Liguria, Lombardy, Veneto, Friuli, and Tuscany.
And after so many hot days and with all the heat accumulated on the ground, the weather will be quite violent.
Hailstorms or, even worse, the infamous flash floods could occur.
Finally, a factor to consider in the coming weeks and months is the already excessively high temperatures of our seas.
The accumulated heat could provide the energy needed to develop particularly violent storm cells.
It’s possible that following this intense deterioration, high pressure will attempt to resurface, but many medium- to long-term dynamics will be determined by the evolution of Hurricane Erin, which, after traveling along the entire East Coast of the United States, will head toward Europe, influencing the weather patterns of the Old Continent.
