(ANSA) – ROME, JUN 16 – A 91-year-old man shot dead his 86-year-old hospitalised wife and then turned the weapon on himself near Varese Monday, local sources said.
The man reportedly entered the hospital in Angera with a small-calibre pistol hidden on him and shot his wife, who was hospitalized in a sub-acute ward in the facility, killing her.
He then turned the gun on himself, shooting and killing himself.
The Carabinieri of the Gallarate company and the Varese department are working on site, coordinated by the local prosecutor’s Office.
The causes of the murder-suicide are being examined.
“It may not be a story of cruelty and mistreatment but of desperation,” police said.
The man is thought to have acted out of compassion and it was a mercy killing due to the state of his wife’s health, police said.
It is not yet known what she was suffering from.
