(ANSA) – ROME, SEP 24 – Democratic Party (PD) leader Elly Schlein said Wednesday that Premier Giorgia Meloni’s government had failed in its duty to protect the Italians taking part in the Global Sumud Flotilla after it was attacked by drones overnight.
“I had asked the Italian government be vigilant and guarantee the safety of the crews engaged in this humanitarian mission in a letter to Giorgia Meloni,” Schlein said.
“Last night boats with male and female Italian citizens on board were attacked in international waters.
“This is a deliberate attack on our country by the Israeli government.
“President (of the Council of Ministers) Meloni cannot remain silent in the face of this.
“She must tell us what she intends to do to guarantee the safety of these Italians, who are working in full compliance with international humanitarian law, because, evidently, her action so far has been ineffective.
“The government must give us explanations about the origin of these drones, where they depart from, and what steps it intends to take to allow all the crew to sail safely”.
Several Italian MPs and MEPs, including lawmakers from the opposition, centre-left PD, are taking part in the flotilla.
