(ANSA) – ROME, SEP 23 – Premier Giorgia Meloni’s plan to recognise the state of Palestine only if the Israeli hostages are released and Hamas removed from Gasa is a “miserable ploy”, ex premier and leftwing 5-Star Movement (M5S) leader Giuseppe Conte said Tuesday.
“The conditional recognition of the State of Palestine, Meloni’s latest ‘invention,’ is a miserable ploy that confirms our government’s indolence. Recognition of a state is a formal act, which in this case also has a high symbolic as well as political value,” he said.
“Either you do it or you don’t.
“Why can’t Italy join the 150 or more other countries that have already recognized the State of Palestine? “The hypocrisy of our government, which continues to stand by Netanyahu, is obscene.
“If Italy doesn’t hurry, the conditions for recognition will no longer exist: simply because there will no longer be a Palestinian population.” (ANSA).
