(ANSA) – ROME, AUG 12 – Premier Giorgia Meloni on Tuesday spoke by telephone with Saudi Prime Minister and hereditary Prince S.A.R. Mohamed bin Salman Al Saud and called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, reiterating that Israel’s plan to occupy Gaza City was concerning and stressing the need to end the “dramatic” humanitarian situation on the Strip, her office said.
The conversation, Palazzo Chigi said, provided an opportunity to discuss the latest developments in the conflict in Gaza as well as the main issues of bilateral cooperation.
“Regarding the situation in Gaza, the two leaders expressed concern about Israel’s most recent decisions, which appear to be leading to further military escalation.
“They emphasized the need to reach, without further delay, a cessation of hostilities to put an end to the dramatic humanitarian situation in the Strip and begin the reconstruction of Gaza, where, the Prime Minister emphasized, the role of Arab nations remains fundamental.
“Agreeing that only a political process toward a two-state solution can lead to a just and long-term peace, Prime Minister Meloni emphasized, as she did yesterday to (Palestinian National Authority) President (Mahmoud) Abbas, the need for Hamas to immediately and unconditionally release the hostages and accept that it cannot play a role in the future of the Strip.
“Finally, the telephone conversation provided an opportunity to reaffirm their shared desire to deepen bilateral cooperation in all areas of mutual interest, starting with the full implementation of the strategic partnership between Rome and Riyadh launched during the Prime Minister’s visit to Al-Ula last January,” the statement concluded.
