(ANSA) – ROME, AUG 20 – The mother of a 13-year-old boy who was at the wheel of a car that knocked over and killed 71-year-old Milanese pensioner Cecilia De Astis on August 11 was arrested in the Lombardy capital Wednesday to serve out an almost four-year sentence for theft.
Roma woman Paola Soulejmanovic, 33, who is also the mother of another of the four youths aged 11 to 13 in the car that night, is set to serve three years and 10 months in jail for pick-pocketing and bag snatching between 2017 and 2019.
She was found with over 130 grammes of gold ornaments and over 1,500 euros in cash, and taken to Milan’s San Vittore Prison.
The case has shone a spotlight on Roma crime in Italy.
Rightwing Leagye party leader and Deputy Premier Matteo Salvini has issued another call for the Roma camp where the families live to be razed.
