NCIS: Sydney Season 3 Episode 4 Merges Kooky Alien Fun with Serial Killer Intrigue

The truth is out there, and sometimes, it’ll piss you off!

One thing that NCIS: Sydney does well is to have absolute fun with its cases and characters, truly. The installments where the show or the characters don’t take themselves too seriously are great palate cleansers between action and high stakes.

NCIS: Sydney Season 3 Episode 4 gave us Roswell, New Mexico fun Down Under, allowing that Mackey Conspiracy from NCIS: Sydney Season 3 Episode 3 to fall to the recesses of our minds and simmer.

Paying Homage to Alien Fun

It was a delightful enough hour with our team descending upon one of the most desolate areas in Australia, where they apparently have their own hub of sci-fi fanatics who are obsessed with UFOs and aliens.

I suppose we cannot have all the fun on that front in the States, like in Roswell.

It’s always entertaining to see the team descend upon random parts of Australia that may not be as commonly known to non-Aussies, or, let’s be real, American viewers.

Half of the field team being Americans means we always get significant reactions to some new adventure in a different part of Australia, and DeShawn is typically the one who delivers the most hilarious reactions.

He was not enthused about being stuck in the desert, where one minute a person could suffer from heat stroke, and by nightfall, you risked hypothermia in a cave somewhere.

And the mini-sand torpedoes dusting up around them were particularly hilarious. I would’ve wanted out of that whole situation immediately.

Evie and DeShawn Can Be More Than Fun

( Daniel Asher Smith/Paramount+ )

He and Evie were in the thick of it, dealing with the elements, while Mackey and JD mainly dealt with the people, and they weren’t faring much better on that front.

But as much as I love it when Evie and DeShawn serve as the comedic relief, I hope at some point this season they get something meatier.

Personally, I love seeing the other sides to them, and they’re both highly competent agents in their own right.

Nevertheless, the two of them introducing themselves in the cave to avoid any reaction or negativity from aliens or spirits was amusing.

And it at least made up for how annoying Evie was when she drank all the water while they were stuck in the middle of that sandy situation.

( Daniel Asher Smith/Paramount+ )

Evie is fun, and I know she loves to poke fun at DeShawn whenever she gets a chance, but sometimes it’s less amusing and more aggravating when she doesn’t know when to stop.

And it came across as irritating during this instalment rather than entertaining or funny.

Carl was a Classic Serial Killer Trope

Did anyone else already predict that Carl was the baddie? He seemed too full of himself, and while it’s normal for someone in a town like that to be a skeptic, his superior attitude was off-putting enough to read as something else.

It came as no surprise that he had that tell-tale arrogance of a serial killer who had been murdering beautiful blond women from all over the globe right in front of everyone’s noses. And he had the best cover for all of this.

There was a small area with barely any reception; he was the one who had the best setup to reach out to people and communicate, and he essentially ran their small area.

( Daniel Asher Smith/Paramount+ )

Ben was a decent enough red herring, but outside of him being a decent suspect for Lucy, there wasn’t much to go on for him to be responsible for Amy or anyone else.

The only thing that piqued my curiosity was what he did with Amy.

I feared the worst and that because she didn’t fit his preferred aesthetic, he would have killed her outright. My heart would’ve broken in two if she and her partner hadn’t gotten married and had their happily ever after.

But instead, Carl was opting to bleach her hair when JD found them.

JD & Mackey Feels Are Still Going Strong

( Daniel Asher Smith/Paramount+ )

The fight sequence with JD was great, and provided that signature action. And the reunion between the couple was endearing.

It was also nice to see JD and Mackey do that thing again, where they acknowledge and allude to their attraction for each other while still leaving it open-ended.

Admittedly, it wasn’t lost on Mackey that she seemed to kick into overdrive when she learned about the engagement plans and that the pilot was willing to risk their professional partnership for their personal love amid all of this.

And her flood of relief when she found JD was okay after worrying that she couldn’t get a message to him was sweet. However, it also makes me paranoid about how their relationship will unfold when JD learns the truth about the cover-up involving Mackey.

Mackey’s Secret Leaves Me Wary

( Daniel Asher Smith/Paramount+ )

I also love how nerdy they both are when they aren’t being badass.

JD’s belief that the moon was made of cheese throughout his childhood was a cute sentiment for him to share, and Mackey, being a closet UFO/Alien nerd, was surprisingly unexpected and whimsical.

I love getting more insight into the other sides of her.
