Newborn Foal Who Barely Made It into the World Is Now Fighting to Stay in It

Meet Saffron.

The foal has been fighting since her first breathe, with her neglected mother doing all she could to bring her into this world.

Her mama was severely neglected – depleted by a life without proper food and care. She arrived at Heart of Phoenix Equine Rescue starved and expected to give birth in eight weeks.

When the time came, the mare gave everything she had to bring Saffron into this world. The birth was difficult and known as a “red bag delivery” – meaning the foal was cut off from the oxygen supply of her mother and immediate action was needed to save her.

Miraculously, both managed to survive but need ongoing care.

Saffron arrived in critical condition and needs around-the-clock monitoring, plasma, and IV support. Veterinarians are working tirelessly to help her overcome a serious condition, known as Neonatal Maladjustment Syndrome, while also supporting her mother so the pair can remain together during recovery.

Mama is regaining her strength and nutrients to hopefully be able to nurse her baby soon. It will be a long and expensive road to recovery for this little foal.

Against all the odds, Saffron continues to fight with her mother by her side. Donate today to give her a fighting chance.
