(ANSA) – ROME, SEP 9 – Pope Leo XIV said Tuesday that he was been unable to make contact with a Catholic community in Gaza after the Israeli authorities ordered Gaza City be evacuated as it conducts its offensive there.
“I sought out the parish priest. I have no news,” he told reporters at the papal summer residence at Castel Gandolfo.
“They were fine, after this new order I’m not sure.” Three people were killed by a strike on the Holy Family Catholic Church in Gaza in July and the parish priest, Father Gabriel Romanelli, was among several people wounded.
Before his death in April, Pope Francis had spoken by phone nearly every day with Romanelli to check up on the Gaza parish following the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023 (ANSA).
