In a move that shocked his millions of fans, Luke Nichols, the creator behind the wildly popular YouTube channel “Outdoor Boys,” announced on May 17 that he is retiring from the platform that made him an unexpected internet celebrity.

In a video simply titled “Goodbye,” which has already amassed over 6 million views in its first 24 hours, Nichols addressed his audience of nearly 15 million subscribers with the news.

“Hey, everyone. This is going to be my last video for a while,” Nichols stated at the beginning of his farewell message.

The former attorney-turned-outdoor survivalist reflected on his impressive journey of creating 1,110 videos during his channel’s run. “It’s been a wild ride,” he said, referencing the countless late nights spent editing footage, camping in extreme conditions, and managing the growing channel.

Despite the channel’s massive success, particularly in the last two years when it gained 12 million new subscribers and amassed 2.8 billion views, Nichols cited privacy concerns as a primary reason for stepping away.

“The sheer volume of fans trying to talk to me… can be overwhelming at times,” he explained in the video. He added that both he and his wife had become increasingly worried about whether their family, which includes their three sons Tommy, Nate, and Jacob, could continue living normal lives amid such intense public attention.

Nichols, 46, started his journey as a content creator with a fishing channel called “Catfish and Carp” before launching “Outdoor Boys” in 2015. What began as a hobby quickly grew into a full-time career; it eventually surpassed his previous work as a criminal defense and immigration attorney in both popularity and income.

Born in Anchorage, Alaska, in 1978, Nichols’ content resonated with audiences through its authenticity and educational value. His videos featured everything from building snow shelters and surviving in sub-zero temperatures to family camping trips and outdoor cooking adventures.

In his farewell video, Nichols mentioned he plans to focus on helping his three sons, who have expressed interest in starting their own YouTube channels. He also noted that he has some half-finished videos that he might release “in one big dump” at the end of the year.

The “Outdoor Boys” channel description reads: “Me and my boys, Tommy, Nate, and Jacob, are the Outdoor Boys. We love all things outdoors: family projects and adventures, travel, forging, camping, campfire cooking, fossil hunting, magnet fishing, metal detecting, goofing around whatever we darn-well feel like!!”

With an estimated net worth of around $2 million generated from YouTube revenue, sponsorships, and merchandise sales, Nichols’ legacy as one of the most respected figures in outdoor education content remains secure, even as he steps away from the platform that brought him fame.

For now, fans of the Outdoor Boys will have to make do with the extensive back catalog of videos as they wait to see what the future holds for Luke Nichols and his family.
