Senator Mike Lee Pulls Land Sale and Issues Statement
In recent weeks, the news cycle has been dominated by the “One, Big, Beautiful Bill” (as well as quite a bit about Iran and tariffs). The bill has become a complex, multifaceted document. One contentious point has been Utah Senator Mike Lee’s proposal to sell off up to 3 million acres of federal public land. This has caused outrage among many hunters, shooters, and conservationists, as well as House and Senate Republicans.
The Statement
Fortunately, this was struck out by the Senate Parliamentarian during review. However, Mike Lee planned to issue a revised version of the land sale with different wording. But, due to mounting pressure from both D.C. and the public, Sen. Lee has withdrawn the land sale. In a post on X, Mike Lee states he decided after listening to “members of the community, local leaders, and stakeholders across the country.” At the same time, he also claims there was misinformation and lies about his bill. Furthermore, he adds:
Because of the strict constraints of the budget reconciliation process, I was unable to secure clear, enforceable safeguards to guarantee that these lands would be sold only to American Families, not to China, not to BlackRock, and not to any foreign interests.
Of course, not selling the land also ensures it won’t fall into foreign interests. Nonetheless, for these reasons, Mike Lee decided to pull the federal sales provision from the bill.
But (there’s always a but) the fight to preserve this land is not over. He continues his statement with the following:
I continue to believe the federal government owns far too much land —land it is mismanaging and in many cases ruining for the next generation. Under Democratic presidents, massive swaths of the West are being locked away from the people who live there, with no meaningful recourse. That has real consequences for Utahns— from raising taxes for schools and funding local search-and-rescue operations, to being able to build homes and sustain rural communities.
Zooming Out
The fight isn’t over; to Mike Lee, it has just begun. What he failed to mention is the lack of support. A Politico article reported that five House Republicans planned to vote against the bill if the land sale measure was included. So, did Mike Lee pull the land sale because of mounting outside pressure from hunters? Or was it the threat of the bill failing and the anger it would cause in the White House that led to this?
