In a significant milestone for South Africa’s tourism sector, UnionPay International and Nedbank are celebrating their eight-year partnership, which has dramatically transformed the payment landscape for international tourists. Since their collaboration began in July 2016, when Nedbank first began accepting UnionPay cards, the reach of UnionPay in South Africa has expanded significantly, with over 90% of the country now accepting UnionPay cards, making it a leader in the tourism payment space.
This partnership has played a pivotal role in enhancing the payment solutions for travelers visiting South Africa, particularly tourists from China, one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing tourism markets. Recent figures have shown a remarkable 215.7% increase in the number of Chinese visitors to South Africa, with 34,669 tourists arriving, a clear indicator of the potential for growth in this sector. To cater to this expanding demand, Nedbank has recently rolled out UnionPay contactless payment options, further tapping into the global digital payments market, which is expected to reach $15.7 trillion by 2029.
The partnership has also aligned with South Africa’s government initiatives to simplify visa processes for visitors from China, as evidenced by the introduction of an e-visa platform. By integrating eCommerce solutions for UnionPay, the partnership is playing an essential role in welcoming more tourists from China, facilitating a seamless payment experience, and supporting the nation’s ambition of attracting 21 million international visitors by 2030.
“The strong, established relationship between Nedbank and UnionPay has been integral to the success of our collaboration,” said Dayalan Govender, Managing Executive: Solution Innovation at Nedbank. “Accepting UnionPay cards has not only opened up a new revenue stream but also allows us to explore future growth opportunities with UnionPay International, not just in South Africa but across the entire African continent.”
UnionPay’s global reach, spanning 183 countries and regions, has proven invaluable for Chinese tourists visiting South Africa, offering them secure and flexible payment solutions. As part of the ongoing expansion, UnionPay International and Nedbank are working together to introduce new card issuance products tailored to the South African market, further enhancing the travel experience for UnionPay cardholders in the travel and entertainment sectors.
Asad Burney, Head of UnionPay International Africa Branch, expressed enthusiasm about the continued success of their collaboration. “UnionPay International is thrilled to mark this milestone with Nedbank and to continue driving growth in tourism and economic ties between China and South Africa. Our partnership helps improve payment solutions for both local cardholders and international visitors, directly supporting the country’s tourism ambitions.”
Nedbank, one of Africa’s largest financial services groups, has a substantial presence in South Africa and beyond, operating in five countries within the Southern African Development Community (SADC), including Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Eswatini, and Zimbabwe. The bank has also formed a strategic alliance with Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI) in Central and West Africa, expanding its reach even further.
UnionPay International continues to innovate and expand its global services, working with more than 2,600 institutions worldwide. With over 250 million UnionPay cards issued outside China, the partnership between UnionPay and Nedbank marks a significant step forward in enhancing cross-border travel and making South Africa a top destination for international tourists.
Through this successful collaboration, UnionPay International and Nedbank are set to play a critical role in shaping South Africa’s tourism landscape, making it easier and more convenient for global travelers to explore all that the country has to offer.
