(ANSA) – ROME, AUG 19 – Jasmine Paolini lost the final of the WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati to Iga Swiatek.
The 29-year-old Tuscan, ranked No. 9 in the world, lost 7-5, 6-4 to the 24-year-old Polish player, ranked third.
With this second-place finish Paolini climbs from ninth to eighth in the WTA rankings, while Swiatek surpasses American Coco Gauf and becomes world no. 2, behind Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka.
The win in Ohio is the Polish player’s 24th career trophy, her 11th in the WTA 1000 category (only Serena Williams, with 13 titles, has beaten her).
This is the sixth time in as many matches that Paolini has failed to overtake Swiatek. (ANSA).
