The Sidewise Awards began in 1995 to recognize excellence in alternate historical fiction. The award takes its name from a 1934 short story by Murray Leinster called “Sidewise in Time” in which a strange storm causes portions of Earth to swap places with their analogs from other timelines. Another way to explain alternate historical fiction is that it explores how historical events might have unfolded differently. It asks ‘what if’? What if the Nazis had won, what if we had discovered another inhabited planet during Neil Armstrong’s spacewalk in 1965? Works must be in English and there are two awards each year. One is the Short-Form Award which are works under 60,000 words (short stories, novelettes, novellas, and poems), and the Long-Form Award which are works over 60,000 words (novels and longer works). If you like fantasy or sci-fi genres, these are well-written, ‘good read’ stories.
