If there were any reservations that The Librarians: The Next Chapter would fail to live up to its predecessor, The Librarians: The Next Chapter Season 1 Episode 2 should have washed them away.
The series has hit the ground running, and the second episode was a remarkable upgrade over the premiere, delivering a near-perfect hour of TV.
Vikram’s storyline as he navigates the world in the present day, almost 200 years after where he grew up, is shaping up to be one of the best.
Poor decisions understandably marred his life as a librarian in the past, and the last thing he wants is to make the same mistakes in the future.
His questions about what became of Anya are valid, so it’s a shame that Elaine diminished his feelings.
As he pointed out, she got to live the last 200 years, but he missed out on them, and it’s been mere days since he was in that period.
Unless he gets some solid answers, and fast, he’ll be haunted by what became of everyone in his orbit.
Vikram Is Headed for Heartbreak on The Librarians: The Next Chapter
Of course, we know that Anya wound up with Gregor, but will there be some way to bring her into the present?
Gregor is already plotting to take down Vikram, so there has to be a reality in which all three of them cross paths, because I’m certain our resident librarian will have some thoughts about his ex shacking up with the villain.
Vikram’s conflicted feelings about the past could hinder his ability to tackle the cases of the week if they aren’t worked through soon.
It seems Elaine won’t be popping up every episode to make snide comments at him, but she should. She was a real hoot compared to the straight-talking gift shop worker Elaine we met on The Librarians: The Next Chapter Season 1 Episode 1.
She comes purpose-built with a wealth of knowledge and sass, and knows more about current times than Vikram, so there’s always an opportunity for them to have some comedic banter.
They go way back, and it would be a travesty not to get a flashback episode to show just how their relationship went sideways.
While Vikram has a reputation, his feelings should be considered more by those around him.
The monster-of-the-week format has been dying out, as has genre fare, so these new cases enthrall me.
Episodic Storylines Are Working Well for This Spinoff
The ballet storyline was well-executed, with every beat allowing Vikram, Charlie, Lysa, and Connor their time to shine.
Anastasia was a wicked witch who thought she could pull the wool over the team’s eyes, but she clearly underestimated the formation she was dealing with.
Knowing how wrong things could go, it showcased how devoted the team was to their respective jobs, but I did laugh when Anastasia used a taser on Vikram.
He’s not well-informed about how the world works in the 21st century and would benefit from reading an encyclopedia.
Still, his big comeback at the end and changing the tempo of the song—er, spell—showcased that he’s the team’s fundamental core.
Anastasia’s actions were both unnerving and despicable, so it was satisfying to see the smirk wash from her face when Vikram told her she was about to be vanquished.
Maybe she should have locked him up rather than leaving him out cold, but this isn’t the type of show I watch for logic.
It’s fun entertainment for the whole family and the perfect throwback to the tone of shows from many years ago.
Charlie is Blossoming into a Great Character
I was on the fence about Charlie after the series premiere because her joining the team seemed a bit contrived, but after seeing how far she went to get on the stage to take down Anastasia, I now believe she has a lot of potential.
As a guardian, she has a storied history, and one that she isn’t willing to share too much about for now.
I hope to get more insight into that as the series progresses. Perhaps Jacob could work through
My biggest concern is how viewers can watch the show on TNT, as there is currently no streaming option.
The airing out of sporting events on TNT means that episodes can air just before midnight, meaning that unless you have cable, it’s hard to watch without purchasing the episodes individually.
With so many great happenings in each episode, it’s a real shame there isn’t a more firm start time. It’s hard to keep the momentum, especially if the show airs so late.
I’ll never know why TNT didn’t just put it on a different night so it could air in the 8 p.m. slot, but the good news is that a second season is already in the works.
All I can do is trust the network’s process and hope it pays off.
