The Studio Did Not Deserve All Those Emmys

The Studio Did Not Deserve All Those Emmys

The Emmys this year were underwhelming to say the least, but The Studio walked away clearly victorious.

It took home 13 Emmys this year, breaking the record for the most Emmys a comedy has won in a single year.

It parodies the Hollywood industry, ironically featuring a plotline that makes fun of awards show culture.

In some ways, Rogen quite literally wrote his desires to win into reality as The Studio took home some major awards, including Best Leading Actor in a Comedy and Best Comedy Writing.

But of course, this begs the question of whether or not The Studio really deserved to sweep the category after beating Hacks, last year’s winner, for the title of Best Comedy.

After watching The Studio and most of its competitors in the category, I would be willing to stand behind the statement that this show didn’t deserve to win as many Emmys as it did.

Let’s Face It: The Industry is All About Connections

As I mentioned before, The Studio pokes fun at the way Hollywood operates, pocking fun at celebrity culture and prestige around the film and television industry.

Ironically, that’s part of how The Studio won the award.

Because Rogen and The Studio’s extensive list of guest stars and recurring stars have been around for so long, they already had a leg up in terms of being in the Television Academy voters’ favor.

Without the extra push from this end, The Studio may not have achieved the success it did at the Emmys, especially since it was up against some really incredible comedies like Hacks and Abbott Elementary that have historically won Emmys.

But the difference is clear: those other shows simply did not have the same kind of star power that The Studio did.

After all, getting Martin Scorsese to be in your show is no small feat.

And of course, Seth Rogen has been in the comedy industry for many years, to the point that having his name attached to anything is guaranteed to generate buzz.

Sure, It Deserved Some Emmys, But Not A Record-Breaking Amount

Having seen the whole show, I can admit that I think The Studio is a pretty good comedy.

It has an engaging storyline and some hilarious jokes that made me laugh out loud.

However, I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s a revolutionary comedy series that deserves to set a new awards record.

While comedy formats are generally predictable, The Studio’s basic premise is very limiting. As a result, the episodes became less exciting to watch as the season progressed, as they essentially recycled the same kind of commentary.

Plus, at some point, you just simply get tired of watching Seth Rogen trip over himself after the third or fourth time.

Compared to Hacks, which had some fascinating twists and turns in the season that it was nominated for, The Studio’s writing wasn’t necessarily worthy of that Emmy.

The directing for The Studio was particularly impressive, given the commitment to the film’s aesthetic and its contribution to the story’s progression.

With Apple TV+ already confirming a second season for this show, The Studio seems set up to be an intimidating contender in the comedy category for future awards seasons.
