Del Toro Wins Tour of Austria, Jungels Triumphs in Feldkirch

What a finale for the 74th Tour of Austria in VorarlbergOver 10,000 spectators in Feldkirch and more than 20,000 along the fifth and final stage cheered on young star Isaac Del Toro, the first Mexican overall winner of the Tour of Austria. With an outstanding performance, Bob Jungels claimed the stage victory around FeldkirchPatrick Konrad finished as the best Austrian in fifth placeStage winner Felix Großschartner, who wore the red leader’s jersey for three days, ended the tour in 10th place.

The 74th Tour of Austria concluded today for the first time in FeldkirchVorarlberg. Even before the start, there was a goosebump-inducing atmosphere in the city center of this medieval gem. The final stage carried the motto “Feldkirch One Hundred – Growing Together,” celebrating the unification of the districts of TisisTostersAltenstadtLevisNofels, and Gisingen with the city center. In Vorarlberg’s second-largest city after Dornbirn, the Tour of Austria became part of the anniversary celebration with a concluding stage spanning 144.1 kilometers and a grueling 3,388 meters of elevation gain. After two neutral laps, the race reached its first mountain classification in Rankweil at kilometer 15 — claimed by former world champion Rui Costa, yesterday’s most aggressive rider.

Vinokurov Secures Mountain Jersey at Furkajoch

The race then moved toward Furkajoch for a climb in the highest category. This scenic pass, also popular with motorcyclists, featured for the first time in the Tour, stretching 20.4 km at a 6.1% gradient. Four breakaway riders — including former Tour winner Riccardo Zoidl (Hrinkow Advarics), Bob JungelsLuca Vergallito, and Sean Quinn — quickly built up over a one-minute gap. Chasing them were three more pros, including KOM leader Nicolya Vinokurov and his closest rival Emanuel Zangerle from Team Vorarlberg. However, they couldn’t catch the leading quartet, where Zoidl claimed the HC climb. As Vinokurov — son of Olympic champion Alexander Vinokurov — crested Furkajoch ahead of Zangerle, he secured the Mautner Markhof mountain jersey early. The next climb to Faschina followed while the peloton trailed by three minutes with 90 km to go.

Bob Jungels Surges Ahead in the Feldkirch Frenzy

Before the final climb of the day — the 5.7 km-long Dünserberg just before the first finish-line pass in Feldkirch — the leading quartet was over 3.5 minutes ahead of the main field, which had already absorbed the chasing group including ZangerleRicci Zoidl and Sean Quinn began to struggle to stay with Jungels (2018 Liège-Bastogne-Liège winner) and Vergallito (2023 winner of the Tour of Upper Austria). After passing the finish line in Feldkirch with thousands of frenzied fans, the riders began the final 45 km loop with a sharp profile. The situation: Jungels broke free from Vergallito, followed by Zoidl 30 seconds behind, with the 30-strong peloton trailing by just over two minutes. Tour de France stage winner Bob Jungels rode a sensational race, extending his lead consistently. Zoidl and later Vergallito were eventually caught by the peloton. At the 20 km mark near BludeschJungels (INEOS Grenadiers) was over three minutes ahead of the field.

Jungels Breaks UAE’s Streak

It could have been the first time in the Tour’s 74-year history that a single team won all stagesUAE Team had claimed the first four. But 32-year-old world-class rider Bob Jungels resisted, celebrating his second victory of the season — after the Luxembourg ITT championship — by winning solo after about 130 km in the lead. He finished 1:45 minutes ahead of former world champion Rui Costa, who won the sprint of the chasing group. Patrick Konrad of Lidl-Trek was the best Austrian, ending on a positive note. Also strong: Philipp Hofbauer of WSA KTM Graz, finishing 20th.

I knew if I could survive that last climb, I had a real shot. It’s been a while since I last won, and it’s getting harder every time. The level here at the Tour of Austria was incredibly high — that makes this victory even sweeter,” said Jungels.

Isaac Del Toro Becomes First Mexican Overall Winner

After winning three stages, 21-year-old Giro runner-up Isaac Del Toro from UAE Team Emirates – XRG secured an impressive overall victory. He was welcomed in Feldkirch by many of his countrymen.

The atmosphere was unreal. The whole week has been crazy, and we can be proud. Yesterday at Kühtai I was at my absolute limit, but we stayed in control the whole time. Kudos to the entire team — everyone did a perfect job. Of course, we hoped Felix would come out on top, but it wasn’t his day. The Tour of Austria is a special race,” said Del Toro.

Second overall went to Archie Ryan (29 sec. back) from EF Education–EasyPost, followed by Del Toro’s teammate Rafal Majka (47 sec. back). Felix Großschartner finished 10th (3:18), best Austrian overall. Philipp Hofbauer placed 15thHermann Pernsteiner (ARBÖ Kärnten Sport Feld am See) came 18th, and Hofbauer’s teammate Martin Messner was 19th — all in the Top 20.

It was a great Tour with the stage win in Steyr and three days in red. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a good day yesterday — but that’s cycling. Sadly, we missed out on that fifth and final stage win. Our big internal goal is to set a new record for wins this season. Last year, we narrowly missed it,” said Großschartner, who was cheered on by his fan club.

Del Toro Takes Three Jerseys

Mexican Isaac Del Toro’s dominance was also evident at the awards ceremony, where he received three jerseys: the red Skoda leader’s jersey, the green points jersey (Austrian Lotteries), and the white young rider’s jersey (supported by DAN Kitchen). The mountain classification — sponsored by Mautner Markhof — went to Kazakh rider Nicolya Vinokurov (Astana). Emanuel Zangerle of Team Vorarlberg finished second. The orange jersey (Gebrüder Weiss) for best Austrian went to Felix Großschartner. The most aggressive rider of the entire Tour was Emanuel Zangerle. The best team was UAE Team Emirates – XRG.
