TSA’s One Stop Security

The U.S. Travel Association, under the leadership of President and CEO Geoff Freeman, has long placed One Stop Security at the top of its policy so-called “wish-list.” They have targeted simplifying security checkpoints, minimizing traveler angst and encouraging foreign airports to work more closely with U.S. agencies to provide a more seamless passenger experience.

The Commission so far: In addition to its previously issued Privatization White Paper, the Commission on December 17, 2006, issued a comprehensive policy framework statement recommending the reenactment and expansion by the federal government of the OSS pilot program. Among their adamant prescriptions was that five international agreements be formalized within five years. The addition of London Heathrow – one of the world’s premier aviation hubs – is the first major step toward that goal.

Freeman emphasized the significance of the move, noting that eliminating redundant screenings not only saves time but helps U.S. airports operate more efficiently, especially during peak travel periods. “This is about transforming the passenger journey from one filled with friction to one of ease, efficiency, and security,” Freeman stated during the announcement.

“One Stop Security is a smart, long-overdue step toward modernizing the travel experience, eliminating redundant screening, cutting connection times and unlocking more international air service. Paired with stronger airport staffing, long-awaited air traffic control upgrades and the end of the shoe removal rule, this is real progress toward a world-class travel system just in time for America 250, the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Olympics. But this momentum is undercut by the proposed $250 visitor visa fee—a move that sends the wrong message to travelers and undermines our global competitiveness.”

Enhancing U.S. Airport Capacity and Global Competitiveness
The benefits of OSS go far beyond convenience. By removing repeat security checks for approved inbound passengers, U.S. airports can better allocate security resources and reduce bottlenecks that frequently lead to delays and traveler frustration. This streamlining can also reduce missed connections and improve operational reliability at major international gateways such as New York JFK, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Miami.

In the global race to attract international travelers, seamless entry into the U.S. gives the country a critical competitive edge. As more countries seek to strengthen tourism recovery and business travel flows post-pandemic, travelers are choosing routes and destinations that offer faster, less stressful experiences. OSS directly supports this demand and aligns the U.S. with modern traveler expectations.

A Blueprint for Future International Agreements
The implementation at Heathrow marks the first of what U.S. Travel hopes will be several strategic partnerships around the world. The Commission on Seamless and Secure Travel has identified numerous other airports with security infrastructures that meet or exceed TSA standards, including those in Canada, the European Union, and parts of Asia-Pacific.

Formalizing additional OSS agreements with these partners will require sustained diplomatic coordination, reciprocal recognition of aviation security protocols, and investments in technological compatibility. However, industry leaders remain confident that TSA can meet the target of at least five new agreements within the next five years.

For now, the focus remains on monitoring and optimizing the rollout at Heathrow. Feedback from airlines, airport operators, and travelers will shape how OSS can scale while maintaining security excellence.

Looking Ahead
With global air travel recovery in progress and evolution, passenger expectations for convenience, trust, and speed are changing the way governments and airport authorities need to consider travel security. Today’s announcement that OSS is going live at London Heathrow shows that movement is not only possible, but happening now.

The TSA’s effort to help make travel abroad easier and more pleasant is now up and running with the full support of the U.S. Travel Association. Done right, an One Stop will rewrite America’s border entry history—making it a paradigm of efficiency and quality traveler experiences.
