UK-designed E10 Bullet Train will redefine Japan’s high-speed travel by 2030, reaching 200 mph with cutting-edge innovation and earthquake-proof technology.
Japan is preparing to revolutionize its high-speed rail network with the introduction of the E10 Shinkansen, a state-of-the-art bullet train set to enter service in 2030. Designed to reach an impressive 200 mph (320 km/h), the E10 Shinkansen will replace the aging E2 and E5 models currently operating on the Tohoku route, which links Tokyo to Aomori in northern Japan.
First International Collaboration in Shinkansen History
Marking a historic milestone, Studio Tangerine, a UK-based design consultancy, has played a pivotal role in shaping the E10’s design—making it the first-ever foreign firm to be invited to collaborate on a Japanese bullet train. The consultancy has been entrusted with crafting both the exterior livery and interior design, ensuring a blend of aesthetic appeal and cutting-edge functionality.
Inspired by Japan’s Natural Beauty
Studio Tangerine has drawn inspiration from Japan’s landscapes, seascapes, and cityscapes, integrating elements of traditional aesthetics into the E10’s design. The train’s exterior color scheme features shades of mid-green, symbolizing the lush mountain forests and picturesque coastlines along the Tohoku route. Additionally, graphic motifs inspired by Sakura (cherry blossom) silhouettes add a distinctively Japanese touch, paying homage to the nation’s cultural identity.
Earthquake-Resistant Innovation and Passenger Comfort
Beyond its sleek and modern look, the E10 Shinkansen has been engineered to withstand seismic activity, ensuring passenger safety even in earthquake-prone regions. The train’s interior design aims to redefine the travel experience by offering enhanced comfort across multiple passenger classes, in line with Japan’s long-standing tradition of omotenashi (hospitality).
Final Development and Launch Timeline
Currently in the design implementation phase, the E10 Shinkansen is expected to roll out on Japan Railways East (JR East) tracks by the end of the decade, solidifying Japan’s reputation as a global leader in rail innovation and passenger experience.
With speed, sustainability, and design excellence at its core, the E10 Shinkansen is set to usher in a new era of high-speed rail travel, seamlessly blending technology, tradition, and world-class engineering.
