UK holidaymakers are increasingly turning to Artificial Intelligence to streamline their travel experiences, with usage of AI-powered travel platforms surging by an impressive 61% compared to last year, according to new research. Conducted by eDreams ODIGEO, a global leader in travel subscriptions and a pioneer in AI-driven travel solutions, the study highlights a profound shift in consumer behaviour, reflecting a growing expectation for hyper-personalised and seamless travel experiences.
The research surveyed 9,000 adults worldwide, including 2,000 UK respondents, and aligns with the UK government’s recent announcement of substantial investments in AI skills development. This broader national push to integrate AI across multiple sectors underscores the relevance of AI adoption among everyday consumers and validates the significant increase in its use for travel planning.
Generational Trends Show Younger Travellers Leading the Way
The study reveals that younger consumers, aged 18 to 34, are spearheading the surge in AI adoption for travel, with usage among this demographic increasing by a remarkable 183% in just one year. This rate of growth far exceeds the overall UK average, indicating a strong appetite among younger travellers for AI-driven solutions that simplify the planning and booking process.
However, the adoption of AI is not limited to younger generations. The research highlights a notable uptick among older travellers, with 48% of UK consumers aged over 55 reporting they have used AI for travel for the first time in the past 12 months. This broad-based adoption signals that AI is swiftly becoming an essential tool across all age groups, bridging generational gaps in technology usage and reshaping the travel experience for everyone.
AI Transforms Travel Planning by Anticipating Consumer Needs
UK consumers are increasingly looking for AI-powered solutions that can anticipate their travel preferences, making the booking process faster, more intuitive, and highly personalised. AI platforms analyse billions of data points daily to predict user choices, allowing travellers to save time and effort while avoiding irrelevant options.
Frustrations with traditional booking methods are a key driver of AI adoption. Among UK consumers, 44% cited a lack of personalisation as their primary pain point, rising to 52% for the 25–34 age group. Other common frustrations included spending time filtering irrelevant travel options (37% overall; 43% among 25–34 year olds) and receiving generic recommendations that failed to align with individual preferences (32% overall; 37% of 25–34 year olds).
These insights have created a clear mandate for travel companies to harness AI capabilities effectively. Platforms such as eDreams and Opodo are at the forefront of this transformation, using sophisticated AI systems to process over 100 million searches daily and generate more than 6 billion predictions. By anticipating traveller needs, filtering out unsuitable options, and delivering highly personalised recommendations, these platforms directly address the frustrations identified in consumer research.
Key Travel Priorities for AI Assistance
UK travellers are increasingly looking to AI for assistance in key areas of travel planning. Finding the best value flights emerged as the top priority (40% overall; 55% of 25–34 year olds), followed by identifying suitable accommodation (29% overall; 46% of 25–34 year olds) and discovering new destinations (28% overall; 45% of 25–34 year olds). Millennials, in particular, are leveraging AI extensively for travel planning, with 56% reporting its use for coordinating trips, surpassing other activities such as group planning (44%) and entertainment choices (40%).
Across all age groups, travel planning and booking remain the areas where technology is most relied upon. Forty-two percent of respondents noted that technology is particularly useful for sourcing flights, finding deals, and recommending destinations, outperforming other common applications such as entertainment selection (31%) or coordinating group activities (28%). These findings underline travel as a leading sector in AI adoption, reflecting consumers’ growing preference for smart, predictive tools that make the entire experience more efficient and enjoyable.
The rapid adoption of AI among UK holidaymakers signals a transformative shift in the travel industry. As travellers increasingly demand personalised, frictionless experiences, companies that effectively leverage AI are positioned to redefine how trips are planned, booked, and enjoyed. This evolution marks a new era where technology is no longer just a convenience, but a central component of modern travel.
