Brian Cassidy needs to stay gone.
He had a perfect exit at the end of Law & Order: SVU‘s first season. But he’s guest-starred on the series several times since then, and each appearance is worse than the last.
Law & Order: SVU Season 27 promises to bring him back yet again, and I can’t imagine a reason this return will be anything but pointless and annoying.

Cassidy Left SVU Because He Couldn’t Deal With the Trauma, so Why Does He Keep Coming Back?
The only episode I ever enjoyed with Cassidy was his original exit.
Cassidy spent most of the first season as a stereotypical macho cop who annoyed victims with insensitive comments, then decided SVU wasn’t for him.
It was too traumatic, and he couldn’t deal with it. It was his most respectable storyline, and it should have been his last.
Cassidy had a strong exit story, which is more than I can say for the silly way Michelle Hurd’s Jeffries was written out.
Plus, there has not been much point to any of his further appearances. The only memorable ones are the ones that annoyed me so much that their existence is forever burned into my brain.
Cassidy Is the Worst Choice for Benson’s Romantic Angst Arcs

I hated the idea of Cassidy and Benson together, so if he’s there to create some ridiculous love triangle with Stabler, I’m going to be especially aggravated.
Cassidy and Benson’s attempts at dating seriously compete with Days of Our Lives‘ Rafe and Hope for the couple most likely to put the audience to sleep.
These two don’t even have anything in common.
If you love Cassidy as much as I hate him, I want to hear from you!
We need engaged readers, robust debates, and passionate disagreements to keep the lights on here at TV Fanatic. Please hit the comments with your thoughts.
Around the time of the William Lewis saga (another storyline best forgotten), Cassidy was shooting down Benson’s ideas about going to museums and other cultural events.
I agree with Mariska Hargitay that any Benson/Stabler romance should happen in the series finale. Still, I’d take a whole episode of Stabler and Benson giving each other longing looks over another moment with Cassidy.
It’s Hard to Think of an Enjoyable Reason for Cassidy to Return

I don’t even remember what he’s doing now.
The only thing that sticks in my mind is that last time he showed up, he was covered with blood and asking Benson to hide him from the police, and I have no idea why she acquiesced to that ridiculous request.
If he comes around with anything as overdramatic as that, I hope this time Benson will have learned her lesson and slam the door in his face.
Beyond that, there’s no real reason for any more Cassidy appearances.
What could he possibly add to SVU?

If he’s still in police work, I guess he could be part of a joint mission with some other department, but I still would prefer his contributions remain off-screen.
The only non-pointless reason for his return is that Cragen has tragic news that forces everyone who ever worked with him back to New York to memorialize him.
That would just piss me off.
Cragen is my favorite old-school character, and Cassidy is my least favorite.
