Vegan & Vegetarian Copenhagen: A Guide to Plant-Based Eating in the City

Vegan & Vegetarian Copenhagen: A Guide to Plant-Based Eating in the City

Vegans and veggies are extremely well looked after in Copenhagen, since the city’s entire food identity has, over time, been shaped by meatless fare. The New Nordic food movement’s focus on vegetables, foraging, and seasonality has laid a natural foundation for plant-based eating, and it shows no sign of disappearing.

Why Copenhagen Works So Well for Plant-Based Diners

Vegan & Vegetarian Copenhagen: A Guide to Plant-Based Eating in the City

The vegetarian and vegan restaurants in Copenhagen reflect the city’s broader focus on sustainability, which is also evident across menus and food shops. You’ll often see roasted root vegetables on open kitchen counters, fermented sides in small ceramic bowls, herb-forward broths, and grain-based plates.

I’ll go out on a limb and say that vegan and vegetarian visitors generally eat better in Copenhagen than in most European cities. This is because the sheer volume of plant-based eateries here is genuinely incredible. Plus, locals who aren’t strictly vegan or vegetarian still like these kinds of dishes every once in a while, so recipes aren’t just geared towards tourists.

If you’re joining one of our Copenhagen food tours and wondering just how vegan- and veggie-friendly the city really is, this guide has you covered. We’ll break down the scene here and point you toward some brilliant spots to eat.

What Does Plant-Based Eating Look Like in Copenhagen?

There’s a difference in the plant-based eating scene in Copenhagen compared to other places I’ve visited. Sure, you’ve got the hip, Insta-worthy spots with that refined, sleek design, but there’s also a genuine openness to veggie eating across the board among Danes.

Traditionally, Danish food culture has leaned pretty heavily on meat, but that’s shifted quite a bit over the years as more and more people embrace meatless plates. Chefs have also become more creative, using fermentation, pickling, and seasonal produce to make vegetable cooking more exciting.

What struck me most about vegan food in Copenhagen was the gorgeous grain bowls, the open-fire vegetable cooking, and the plant-based takes on Nordic classics that still feel true to the local palate.

Dedicated Vegan Restaurants in Copenhagen

Vegan restaurants in Copenhagen offer something for everyone, from casual joints like Vital Foods to upscale produce-led menus at Ark. What sets them apart from their European counterparts is their focus on ingredient quality, kitchen ambition, and design sense, all of which make the overall experience feel far more exciting.

Best Vegetarian Restaurants Copenhagen Has to Offer

If you’re a vegetarian, you’re going to have a lot of fun eating in Copenhagen. Restaurants like Vækst serve a wealth of vegetarian dishes that are treated with the same importance as meat plates.

You also have neighborhood bistros and casual dining rooms with plant-based options that go beyond a simple side salad. Sloppy Joe’s is one to check out, with its mouthwatering sandwiches and crave-worthy chips.

The New Nordic influence on veggie food here is really noticeable wherever you go. Some of Copenhagen’s fancy restaurants have turned vegetable tasting menus into world-class dining experiences. One such example is Norrlyst, which offers a vegetarian set menu with a distinct New Nordic twist.

As a vegetarian, you may be understandably wary when eating out, worrying about cross-contamination and wanting to be sure your plates are 100% vegetarian. The easiest way to spot authentic places is to look for those that brand themselves as veggie-only rather than veggie-friendly, with menus that skip meat entirely.

Vegan and Vegetarian Eating by Neighborhood

The main hubs in Copenhagen for vegetarian and vegan food are Nørrebro, Vesterbro, Indre By, and Nørreport, and also Frederiksberg and Østerbro.

Nørrebro has the most vegan and vegetarian restaurants in one area, and it’s brimming with multicultural character. Vesterbro is also packed with plant-based cafés and natural ingredient-led kitchens. Move over to Indre By and Nørreport, and you’ll find plenty of central options that you can pop into that aren’t too far from the city’s main sights.

Frederiksberg and Østerbro are two low-key residential areas with a slew of cafés and lunch spots you should also add to your list. Govinda’s Kitchen focaccias are the real deal!

Vegan Food at Copenhagen’s Markets and Food Halls

Copenhagen’s food markets and halls have their fair share of vegan food too. Torvehallerne caters well to both vegan and vegetarian visitors through its produce, prepared food, and pantry items.

The waterside street food spot Reffen is much the same, with nearly all of its many stalls offering some kind of vegetarian or vegan option, especially Buddha Rolls with its Asian-inspired green bowls.

You’ll also find vegan food at neighborhood markets and seasonal pop-ups like Grønt Marked, which specializes in local produce.

Vegan-Friendly Cafés and Daytime Eating in Copenhagen

For a midday feed, nothing beats the city’s vegan-friendly cafés for some easy, relaxed daytime eating. Think good coffee, nourishing food, and a chill vibe for a slow, plant-based morning. Spots like Wrap House offer a great mix of wraps and bowls, with vegan and vegetarian options available alongside meaty recipes.

There are also a good number of locations serving up seriously tasty plant-based pastries and baked goods, including vegan wienerbrød at Det Rene Brød and dairy-free bakes at Schmith & Thunberg. Brunch places like Social Brew put a genuine focus on vegetarian and vegan dishes, like the tofu scramble, rather than burying them at the end of the menu.

Practical Tips for Vegan and Vegetarian Visitors to Copenhagen

  • Communication: When explaining your dietary needs to staff, be clear and specific about exactly what you want on your plate. Staff are generally very accommodating and will help however they possibly can, especially at vegan- or veggie-only spots.
  • Budget: Expect to spend somewhere between DKK 100 (approx. €13 / $15) and 200 (approx. €27 / $30) per person, though ordering small plates will usually bring that figure down. At vegetarian-friendly places, you can often get away with spending just DKK 75 (approx. €10 / $11) if you keep your order small.
  • Apps and resources: Besides Eating Europe, you can also use Google Maps to find vegetarian and vegan restaurants in Copenhagen and discover options near where you are staying.
  • Photography: Vegan and veggie food tends to be colorful, so to capture the best shots of these plates and all their textures, try to take some snaps when natural light is coming in from outside.
