(ANSA) – ROME, SEP 23 – The violence of Familia, Italy’s candidate for the best foreign film Oscar, is a universal and urgent theme, its director Francesco Costabile said after learning of its selection Monday.
Family tells the story of a young far-right militant whose life is shattered by the return of his abusive father after a 10-year absence.
“Gender violence belongs to all societies; it is a transcultural, universal, and urgent theme to bring to the public’s attention, especially in this historical moment,” said the 44-year-old Calabrian director “Even more so today, with the death of Charlie Kirk, who was an extreme representative of fundamentalist Catholic America in which women are victims.
“When they called me,” Costabile added about getting the news, “I thought it was a prank call”.
He called it a “courageous choice.” (ANSA).
