Voluntary manslaughter charge dropped for Brandizzo disaster

(ANSA) – ROME, JUL 24 – The Ivrea prosecutor’s office said Thursday that it has concluded its investigation into the disaster at Brandizzo station near Turin on the night of August 30, 2023, when five men working on the tracks were hit and killed by a train travelling at 160 km per hour.
It said 21 people and three companies are under investigation for culpable homicide.
The most serious of the charges the prosecutors had been initially been investigating, voluntary manslaughter with possible intent, has been dropped.
Workers Kevin Laganà, Michael Zanera, Giuseppe Sorvillo, Giuseppe Aversa and Giuseppe Saverio Lombardo were killed in the accident.
The company they worked for, Sigifer, is under investigation along and rail infrastructure company RFI and Bologna-based rail-construction firm CLF.
Former RFI CEOs Vera Fiorani and Gianpiero Strisciuglio are among the individuals who are under investigation. (ANSA).
