Why Danny Being A Fish Out Of Water On Boston Blue Is an Exciting Change

Make no mistake about it: Boston Blue is a fish out of water story.

Danny’s lived in New York his entire life, with his family right there to have his back.

But when he arrives in Bean Town on Boston Blue, everything is different, and that offers some exciting opportunities for him as a character.

Danny Was Never My Favorite Reagan, But This Changes Everything

I confess, I was never a huge Danny Reagan fan, especially during the early seasons of Blue Bloods.

Danny was too hotheaded for my liking, and he broke the rules so often that it was unrealistic that he still had a badge.

Frank was well aware that Danny was the problem child, and Danny’s behavior didn’t begin to change until Blue Bloods Season 8, when Linda died and Danny had to adjust to being a single father.

That was the beginning of his having some depth, but he still wasn’t the Reagan I was most excited about.

I was more interested in Jamie, especially when Blue Bloods ended with Jamie and Eddie expecting their first child.

So, when I learned the new spinoff would be about Danny, I was skeptical.

However, when Donnie Wahlberg described Danny as a fish out of water in Boston, I began to become intrigued.

I am all about character growth, and this premise offers Danny so much of it.

Danny Will Be Sitting At Someone Else’s Table, And That’s A Good Thing

The family dinner scenes in Blue Bloods featured the Reagan family, all of whom were comfortable with one another, sitting down to Sunday dinner.

Occasionally, someone from outside the family would be invited, but we never got their perspective.

In Boston Blue, however, Danny is that outsider.

He’ll get to see what it’s like to sit at the table of a prominent police family, yet not be a part of that family.

I’m sure he’ll fit in, but it won’t be the same.

I’m excited about that because it automatically gives Danny a different perspective.

He’s never really known what it feels like for outsiders to sit at the Reagan table, so I’d imagine that this change in perspective might shake some of his firmly held beliefs.

He’ll have to reckon with the fact that his family was like royalty in New York and that he’s not in the same position in Boston.

And whenever someone realizes that what they thought they knew isn’t all there is to the story, it challenges them and forces them to grow.

The Silver Family Is Very Different In Some Ways

The Silvers will have their own culture, as a blended Black/Jewish family, that is somewhat different from the Irish Catholicism that Danny was raised with.

The really cool thing, though, is that they will probably have some of the same traditions, such as weekly family dinners and lively debates around the table.

It’s one of those things where Danny will be different yet the same, which helps spread the message that diverse people can share the same values.

Still, though, there will be times when Danny’s values clash with the Silvers’.

He disagreed plenty with his own family, and some of the best Danny scenes were when he was annoyed by them.

It’ll be different when it’s not his family.

There will be times when the way he does police work, the way he relates to others, and the way he lives his life accidentally step on others’ toes.

He may say something that someone finds upsetting or offensive, which is where the most meaty conflicts live.

Danny will likely be challenged by new ideas and other perspectives that he never considered now that he’s in Boston, and I can’t wait to find out how he handles that!
