X-Project 2026 – St. Moritz (SUI): Three foil sports unite for the first time

for the first time, three progressive watersports disciplines, pump foil, wing foil, and windsurf (with and without hydrofoil), were brought together in a single competition at the X-Project in St. Moritz, Switzerland. International athletes competed for the overall title across three days and two spectacular alpine lakes.

Athletes competed in an innovative jam format that encouraged progression, allowing multiple attempts at their most difficult tricks, with only their best run counting.

Pump foil opened the competition, with judges rewarding style, flow, technical difficulty and trick combinations. Switzerland dominated the discipline, claiming all three podium places. Nineteen-year-old Robert von Roll, the 2024 Swiss Freestyle Champion, secured victory with an exceptionally technical routine featuring intricate footwork and powerful carving. Gian Bohlhalder (SUI) finished second after impressing with relentless consistency, while 15-year-old Matheo von Roll completed the all-Swiss podium in third.

The overall X-Project title was decided across all disciplinesTomas Acherer (AUT) (Current GWA Wingfoil World Tour leader in the Freestyle discipline) impressed both in tow-assisted riding on Lake St. Moritz and in strong wind conditions on Lake Bianco, where he showcased the world-class riding that earned him the 2026 X -Project title. Swiss foil pioneer Balz Müller demonstrated his exceptional versatility to earn second overall. France’s two-time European Freestyle Champion Sam Esteve claimed third place after landing a series of high-speed technical manoeuvres, including a Flaka Shaka and a triple air funnel.
